for this concept by french architecture firm, valode & pistre, ABC stands for an ‘autonomous building for citizens’. envisioned for a site in the new ecocité district of grenoble in france, the residential project has been developed over the past eight years with bouygues construction.

the ABC concept places the resident at the heart of the structure to meet current expectations and changes in society: pooling of facilities, information and control system, modularity of certain spaces. A is for autonomous. the project targets water and energy self-sufficiency and optimized waste management. by mixing renewable energy production, energy storage and better- controlled consumption, valode & pistre suggests another way of living that is well integrated into its natural environment from which it draws the necessary resources to function, such as water and heat.

B is for building. the ABC concept breaks new ground with its construction. it proposes to incorporate a certain amount of standardization to build faster while maintaining a high level of quality. C is for citizens. ABC goes beyond a purely technical approach; an essential issue is to involve residents throughout the process so that they can take on board the specific features and innovations of the project.

the project involves creating a built complex capable of capturing maximum solar energy while becoming an integral part of the architecture of grenoble’s new eco district. the morphology of buildings is designed to fit the site. the concept is topped with angled photovoltaic roofs, which echo the shape of the surrounding mountains.

the project provides residents with bicycle parking, a large communal hall and vegetable gardens. large technical rooms (water and batteries room) are planned for storing the resources, water and energy; rainwater is made safe to drink. innovative recycling showers can limit the use of water resources even further. every resident knows and controls his consumption. the residents will monitor the project’s performance and appropriation for five years to make a precise assessment.
